Some Common Smoking Cessation Methods

Cigarette smoking and nicotine addiction afflict many people and the numbers continue to rise.Studies show that high school kids continue to pick up the habit at an alarming rate.

But, with research over the past several decades, we know today that smoking is a fatal habit.Like many, you may have made the big decision to quit.So let's look at a few different assistance programs available to aid in your cessation goals.

Hypnosis

There are a couple of different ways to use hypnosis to stop smoking.

One option is to go to a therapist who specializes in hypnosis and have them perform the procedure. You can also practice self-hypnosis to create your own hypnotic state.Either way, the method is the same.Once in the hypnotic state, either by therapist or self, the subconscious mind is in the driver's seat.Messages are given directly to the subconscious mind.

The subconscious mind is always in control of behavior, so addressing the subconscious directly can actually affect behavior patterns. The messages given to the subconscious mind will redirect or reprogram the behavior of smoking. You can actually train your brain to believe you are a non-smoker.This method will take more than one session to work.It usually requires up to three to four weeks to change the smoking habit.

Nicotine Gum

Nicotine gum is another cessation aid.

It is gum with nicotine in it, as the name suggests. When you have made the decision to quit smoking, adding in the gum to fight off urges can be extremely helpful. You must quit smoking before using the nicotine gum.Smoking and chewing the gum at the same time can be extremely dangerous.

But, since the gum helps with the withdrawal symptoms from nicotine, quitting smoking can happen with less physical stress than going it cold turkey. Most people will chew up to a dozen pieces of gum in the first month, but will chew less and less as the urges slow.

Prescription Medication

There are many prescription drugs on the market to help with smoking cessation.

The most common names, Wellbutrin, Zyban and Chantix, are nicotine-free.They work by increasing the chemical messengers in the brain which ease the nicotine cravings and withdrawal symptoms.

This treatment is usually started at least one week prior to quitting smoking and it generally takes two to three months for the nicotine replacement therapy to work effectively. If you are considering this treatment for quitting smoking, you should consult your doctor. There are some side effects but generally is a great alternative to cold turkey.

Natural Remedies

Herbs such as ginseng, St.

John's Wort and lobelia have been used with varying effectiveness to aid in quitting smoking.Ginseng works to block the neurotransmitter dopamine, which is what creates the sense of pleasure while smoking, to curtail the addiction factor.Lobelia acts in the complete opposite way, replacing the nicotine which is the addictive drug that triggers the release of dopamine. The lobelia will trigger the same effect in the brain.St.John's Wort has generally been used to treat depression, but seems to have a calming effect on those going through withdrawals.

Never a Better Time to Quit

This is the 21st Century and there are more tools to help you reach your non-smoking goals than ever before.

Your health is too precious to waste another day as a smoker.Consult your doctor and choose the plan that's right for you. Then, enjoy the pleasures of a smoke-free lifestyle.

Discover How Dental Implant Surgery Can Have You Smiling Like A Movie Star

Dental Implant surgery constitutes Phase I of Dental Implant Treatment.Pain is kept to a minimum during the procedure through the use of local anesthetic applied during single implantations.Multiple implants may require outpatient services and the use of general anesthetic.

Regardless, it is the goal of every cosmetic dentist to make this complex and highly specialized process as comfortable for the patient as can be expected.General feedback that we consistently receive from patients who have undergone dental implant surgery is that the procedure is much less painless than a tooth extraction.

For a person who has already had teeth pulled, or lost them in an accident, dental implant surgery is the first step to less pain, greater relief, and a more robust and normal lifestyle.

Because this is a very advanced and highly individualized procedure, a great deal of care and planning is undertaken in the beginning. The dentist begins by using taking x-rays of the jaw bone and existing teeth.

This allows the dentist to determine exactly how much bone structure exists that can support the implant. The dentists will also make a scale model of the patients existing teeth to determine the best possible size and placement locations for the new implants.

In cases where there has already been some bone deterioration, or problems with the gums themselves, the dentist may perform a bone or tissue graft to create enough surface area to provide reasonable assurance for successful dental implant surgery.

The actual implant itself is a relatively simple structure. It is made of Tivolloy, a Titanium-based alloy that is bio-friendly, non-corrosive, and quickly accepted by bone as a substitute for a tooth root. The base of the alloy is designed like a screw that twists into the bone and seats against it.

This is done, of course, with some sort of anesthetic to minimize discomfort to the patient during the surgery. This new artificial tooth root, if we can call it that, then becomes the foundation for the restorative implant that will follow. In some cases, the dentist may cover the implant with a temporary crown to protect it during the healing phase of the process.

After the patient has undergone the dental implant surgery phase of tooth replacement, he or she must wait anywhere from 3-6 months for full healing to occur. This is known as osseointegration, so called because the bone actually grows around the titanium implant and treats it like a new, but nonetheless natural, part of the mouth.

It is very important that the patient follow to the letter all dental hygiene procedures that are prescribed by the dentist. This healing phase is very crucial to the successful outcome of dental implant surgery and infection or complications are something we strive to prevent at all costs.

After osseointegration is complete, the patient is then ready for the restorative phase of dental implantation. This will involve placing another screw called an abutment into the titanium base, then capping the entire structure with a porcelain crown. The end result is a brand new tooth that is resilient, can chew any food the patient desires to eat, and look virtually indistinguishable from natural teeth.

While it is our goal to provide dental implant surgery for every patient who needs replacement teeth, there are cases where bone loss is too severe for a full set of implants to be placed in the jaw bone.In these instances, the dentist can place selective implants in the jaw to serve as anchors for fixed bridge work (as in the case of full mouth reconstruction) or even partial dentures.

Each case is different and highly individuated, but at the end of the day, we see to it that no human being who enters our office leaves with any gaps in their smile, or has to live with generic dentures that limit normal diet and cause embarrassment at the worst of times.

What Really Causes Sinusitis? Nurse's Guide

First of all, what exactly are sinuses? The sinuses are the air chambers or cavities in the bone that rests behind your cheeks, eyebrows and jaw.The sinuses make mucus, which is a fluid that cleans bacteria, viruses, fungi and other particles out of the air you breathe.Tiny hairs called cilia keep mucus out of your sinus cavities so it can drain out through your nasal passages.

Sinusitis is the name given to any inflammation of the sinuses. This can be irritation, inflamed areas or infected areas.Any blockage of the sinus drainage can be caused by foreign particles or the swelling of the tissue that secretes the mucus. It leads to the accumulation of the mucus inside the sinus.A quart of fluid moves through the sinuses every day.And when the sinuses get blocked it backs up.

Sinusitis can be caused by bacteria, viruses or fungi. When they get infected it's called a sinus infection.Sometimes sinus infections occur after you've had a cold as a complication. The cold virus attacks the lining of the sinuses, which causes them to swell up and become narrow sometimes closing completely.Your body reacts by producing more mucus, but it gets even more blocked in your swollen sinuses. This mucus back-up can cause bacteria to grow. The bacteria can cause a sinus infection if you didn't have one already. This excess mucus production can cause sinus congestion.

For many years it was thought that most sinus infections were caused by bacteria. But a sinus research study surprised the scientists by revealing that most of the infections were caused by fungi. There were at least 40 different fungi found. Some people had two or more types in their sinus cavities. This changed the course of treatment dramatically and resulted in fewer doctors prescribing antibiotics for sinus infections.Fungi is simply mold.

Unfortunately mold is everywhere and air borne too and it may not be easy to remove the cause. You can check your bedroom, bathroom and kitchen for mold and clean it up if you have it.Check around the toilets, tubs, sinks and showers.Make sure you wear a quality mask or have someone else with a mask clean it thoroughly.Even if you get better you may get reinfected if your sinus infection.

Other causes that may affect breathing and block nasal drainage include anatomical causes.Anatomical causes of sinusitis include a deviated septum.Polyps, tumors or other growths may develop and block sinus passages and cause sinusitis.

Some other causes that increase one's susceptibility include changes due to pregnancy, working with children, and smoking. Many smokers suffer from chronic sinusitis.Allergies and reflux disease (GERD) can contribute also.Tooth infections can cause sinusitis and dental work including extractions and root canals can inflame or infect the sinuses, if they are near your sinuses.

Children with enlarged or infected adenoids (located in the upper back part of the throat) can cause sinus problems too.

Anything that causes swelling in your sinuses or keeps the cilia from moving mucus through can cause sinusitis. This can occur because of changes in temperature or air pressure.Allergies such as hay fever can cause sinusitis.Using decongestant nasal sprays too much swimming or diving can also cause or increase your risk of getting sinusitis.

It's important to know what causes sinusitis, assuming you know you have it based on your symptoms, so you can try to remove the one or more causes that are causing it whether it's acute or chronic. There are a few other causes too, not gone into here.

5 Biggest Weight Loss Lies That Are Killing You

There is plenty of inaccurate data going around the weight loss industry and many people who are getting on this platform and looking for ways to lose weight have fallen victim to such weight loss lies.Let us look at some of the most popular lies circulating in this industry.Look at healthy ways to conquer obesity, as we solve the root cause of obesity.

Weight Loss Lie #1: Avoid carbohydrates to loss weight fast.
This is perpetuated by the most famous high protein diets-the Atkins diet, South beach and a whole lot of other popular diets that promotes a diet rich in protein and low in carbohydrates. While such diets can produce significant weight loss in a short amount of time, the results are hardly long lasting and as soon as you start eating normally again, the weight comes plummeting back, even more than before!

Weight Loss Lie # 2: Genetics is the biggest factor in weight loss.
To a certain extent, genetics do play a role in determining your metabolic rate, but this doesn't mean that your fate is sealed if you have obese parents and grandparents.
The most important factor in determining your success in any weight loss program is the number of calories you eat and the amount of physical activity you get in a single day.Genetics do play a role in determining how much calories you will burn, as those with slower metabolic rates may burn calories much slower than those who are active and have higher metabolic rates. But there are always ways you can speed up a slow metabolism so don't ever use this excuse.

Weight Loss Lie # 3: All fat is to be avoided.
Some people believe that cutting down on fat is necessary during a weight loss program. But the key to effective fat control is cutting down on the dangerous fats and increasing your intake of the good fat.At all costs, do avoid Trans fat and Saturated fat and increase the intake of healthy fats such as Polyunsaturated and Omega-3 that are abundant in foods like fish, olive oil, and avocados.

Weight Loss Lie # 4: Skipping meals is good for you.
Skipping meals can lower your metabolism and makes it more difficult to lose weight.Regular meals are important, and what you need to do is to consume more of the foods which are good for you, which means more salads, vegetables, nuts and fruits!Snack on a few fruits and decrease the amount of times you reach out for the next scoop of your favorite ice-cream.

Weight Loss Lie # 5: Grapefruit Miracle works wonders.
This is one lie that has no basis in reality. There is a group of individuals who are promoting grapefruit as a way to lose fat.In fact there is one small isolated research that states that there is a magic fat-burning enzyme that can help you lose weight simply by consuming this fruit. However the validity of the claims are yet to be answered of whether the citrus industry did play a role in funding those researches.Grapefruits are rich in lycopene, and a good source of ingredients that can help provide nutrients and care for the cellular health that prevents cancer and heart diseases.

So, there you have the top 5 weight loss lies that you may have been familiar with. Now that you have the knowledge to separate fact from fiction, the path to weight loss and a healthier lifestyle is open wide for you.Good luck in your weight loss goals. For more healthy diet and weight loss tips to conquer obesity look no further.

Low Carb Diets - Do They Work?

For decades if not centuries, the belief was that if you stopped eating fatty foods you would lose weight, but that other foods (healthier foods) were completely okay. However, this entire belief was thrown for a loop when some individuals started inventing low carb diets - diets that had no carbohydrate rich foods like bread, rice, pasta, as well as some vegetables and fruit - all of which seemed to be very effective at helping people lose weight.

The Atkins Diet, for example, was a diet that had 0 carbohydrates but a great deal of fatty foods like meats, high protein foods as well as healthier foods like fruit. That diet was considered an amazing phenomenon, because individuals that tried it seemed to shed pounds at a rapid pace, going from large to thin in just a few months.

However, carbohydrates have always been known as important for your body to work correctly. So these diets have come under intense scrutiny, especially about their safety and the ability to keep weight off.

Do the Diets Work?

Low carb diets do work quickly.People that want to lose weight fast are better known to lose weight quickly on a low carb diet than on regular low fat, low calorie diets. However, in some ways the data is misleading.

Low carb diets cause:

1.

A loss in the amount of water weight you have because the low number of carbohydrates in your body cause it to burn a chemical called glycogen.Glycogen contains a great deal of water, so you are losing water from your body as well.

2.Increased Fullness - Most people that have low carb diets report less hunger and often feel full easier and for longer during the day.Because of this, few of them tend to overeat, which obviously caused a great deal of weight gain.

3.Less Calories - Less calories does equal less weight gain, and carbohydrates have calories.Reducing your caloric intake means that you are going to see weight loss in the low carb diets.

If you will notice, however, there is not a lot of loss of body fat in your body. With the exception of reducing your calories, you are really just eating less (which most people should do anyway) and losing water weight (which may or may not be healthy.

Risks and Safety

In addition, there are a lot of red flags about the safety of a low carb diet.

Very little is known about the health of these diets because they are all relatively new, however a few things can be garnered simply by common sense:

1.

Carbohydrates are necessary for energy. Most likely if you are now eating enough carbohydrates, you are not exercising much, in which case while you may look healthy, your heart and muscles are likely very negatively affected by the lack of physical activity.
2.High fat foods are going to be high in bad fats, as well as cholesterol, which can cause some severe health problems, including increased risk for heart attack and high blood pressure.
3.Carbohydrates have always been a part of your life, since early man.Taking them out of your diet altogether can potentially cause a number of health problems down the road even beyond the increased heart attack risk - and these will not be known because the diets are too new to research over the long term.

While these diets have shown some strong efficacy, they have potential risks. In general, a low fat, high exercise diet is going to be healthier, and poses no known risks in the short or long term.
